At this location, the shortest river in Belgium flows into the Scheldt. The Rupel River, only 12 km long, starts in Rumst at the confluence of the Nete and the Dijle. At this point, the Rupel is joined by the Sea Canal and the Wintham lock complex.

The Rupel is only 12 km long but in some places up to 230 m wide. It is formed by the confluence of the Nete and the Dyle. The Nete itself is created by the confluence of the Grote Nete and Kleine Nete and the Dijle, in addition to Dijlewater, also drains the water of the Demer and the Senne. The Rupel flows into the Scheldt in Schelle. Rupelmonde is located on the left bank of the Scheldt, so on the other side of the mouth.
