St. Marien Sondermühlen is the smallest of the five parishes of the St. Matthäus parish. There are a total of 320 members, spread across the districts of Dielingdorf, Eickholt, Niederschlochtern and Sondermühlen.

Our St. Marien Church is not only the geographical centre of our parish.

A little history:
The present-day town of Sondermühlen has its origins in the moated castle "Gut Sondermühlen", which was already mentioned by name at the end of the 15th century. During the Reformation, a Catholic noble family lived on the estate and had the estate chapel of St. Nikolaus built on its land. The current parish church was then built in 1869.

The current tower made of natural stone, striking and visible from afar, was only built between 1928 and 1930 after the original tower had become dilapidated and had to be demolished. The tower houses a total of 4 bells, 3 of the original bells were melted down during the Second World War. Only the smallest bell, the Antonius bell, still rings in its "original" form. Antonius was also the saint who originally gave our church its name. It was not until 1954 that the then pastor Kreuzhermes had the church renamed "Maria zur Immaculate Conception".
