The lock had the function of water control of the city. It was built on the Kleine Nete, which crossed Lier. The water could be temporarily stored and then run through the city to drain the city, to rinse it clean. If there was a risk of flooding, the sluice could be closed and the water was led via a connecting channel to the Grote Nete, which made an arc around the city. In addition to the function of water control, it also had a role in the defense of the city. The building on the lock was originally used to house the lock keeper. Older inhabitants of Lieren also nicknamed it the pest house. However, this name was not chosen entirely correctly, the actual plague house was located a little further along the Grote Nete.

Sashuis "Groot Spui", built under the leadership of Anthonis I, Anthonis II and Rombout II Keldermans, between 1508 and 1516, following the digging of a connection between Grote and Kleine Nete in 1426. Two locks were installed here, namely the Groot and the Klein Spui (now gone). The Groot spui had a double function, namely protection of the mechanism for regulating the water level in the Kleine Nete and reinforcement. Restored between 1983-1987 after a design by R. De Bruyn.

The Spui or Groot Spui, the former lock house on the Binnennete, is the only remaining building of the second city wall.
After excavating a connection between the Grote and the Kleine Nete in 1426, Antoon Keldermans built the Groot Spui in 1508-1516. There will be two locks, the Groot and the Klein Spui.
Now only the Groot Spui remains.
The lock house had a double function:
- strengthening the city
- protection of the mechanics, which regulated the water level of the city
Today, the "Society of the Schaepshoofden" rents the building from the city council. Associations and individuals can organize activities there.
