Fort Spion - built between 1844 and 1847 - is a fort that was part of the New Dutch Water Line. As early as 1803 there was a battery on this site, which was part of the old Dutch water line. In 1844 the construction of an earthen redoubt with a defensible brick guardhouse, Building A, was planned.

Fort Spion is a so called "Dike Access Post" because it is located on a narrow passage in an area that is under water. Built between 1879 and 1880, the shape and construction history of this fort bears many similarities to Fort Kijkuit.

Between 1879 and 1880 it was completely modernized. A wing was added to the guardhouse on the north and south sides. A guardhouse with an ammunition depot (Building B) was built into the wall on the north-west side of Building A. A concrete depot, Building C, was constructed in the front wall with an earth cover. A bridge and the house of a fortress guard were built immediately outside the moat.

In the 1930s, the Bloklaan was widened and expanded. The fort was reinforced by a heavy concrete casemate south of Building C. In 1939-1940 several concrete group shelters and a turret casemate for a machine gun were built. The dome of the latter was removed by the German occupiers and melted down for the war industry. There are also remains of a tank barrier that was erected just before the outbreak of war.

By royal decree of August 16, 1960, the fort lost its military function as a fortress.

camping

Today, Fort Spion is set up as a small, simple campsite. No canteen, no bingo, no swimming pool and no playgrounds, but a nice little campsite in a historical place. Showers and toilets are available in the fort. There is parking for about 5 cars but no space for folding trailers, RVs or trailers. To camp here you must be a member of the Stichting Natuurkampeerterreinen. Further information can be requested by telephone.
