Karlstadt, founded around 1200, has a lot to offer. In the old town, surrounded by walls, towers and gates, the visitor discovers buildings and structures that have been preserved for more than eight centuries. In particular, the Romanesque-Gothic "small town cathedral" of St. Andreas, the historic town hall with stepped gables from 1422 and the ornate half-timbered facades of the proud town houses impressively present the architecture of bygone days. The Karlburg ruins on the left bank of the Main are also worth seeing.
