The castle hill is already 750 BC. Settled. 1180-1186 construction of the castle by the Archbishop of Mainz. At the time there was constant war between the Landgraviate of Hesse and the Archdiocese of Mainz. 1232 Destruction by the Thuringian Landgrave. 1247 Destruction by the Landgrave of Hesse. 1401 reconstruction. End of the century. Beginning of final decline. 1935-1939 excavation of the ruins and partial renovation. 2002-2012 further systematic restoration.

The steep climb to the castle ruins is worth it! A wonderful view awaits you from above (distant view). The ruins are always open and freely accessible, including the keep (except when the Christmas lights are on). There are also shelters and picnic options at the castle.
