The counterpart to the highest elevation in Germany, the 2962 meter high Zugspitze, in the Wilstermarsch is inconspicuous and not easy to find. This point is located exactly 3.539 meters below sea level in the Schleswig-Holstein Neuendorf-Sachsenbande.

This point is located exactly 3.539 meters below sea level in the Schleswig-Holstein Neuendorf-Sachsenbande. Almost the entire town with its almost 500 inhabitants is below or at sea level. Only small signs draw attention to the area, which is located directly on highway 135 at kilometer 6.4.

The inscription “Tiefste Landstelle der B.R. Germany". The colors of Schleswig-Holstein and Germany are waving to the left and right of it. A few meters away, a pole more than eight meters high illustrates the relationship. It shows the height of the Elbe dikes and also markings for the storm surges of past decades.

The water reached its highest level at 6.16 meters above sea level on January 3, 1976. If the eight meter high Elbe dikes had not existed, the water would have been almost ten meters high there. In the background, the wind turbines turn in the Wilstermarsch.

Thousands of people stop here every year. When it rains, they find shelter in a small house. There is also an inconspicuous black ring binder hanging there. The municipality, which has almost 500 inhabitants, has archived around 1850 pages over the past six years.

It's a real experience to stand at the lowest point in Germany. Unfortunately, there is no information about nearby hikes worth seeing. On my hike, I walked long stretches along the busy road and it's not a nice feeling when cars drive past you at 80 km/h.
