If you come from the Dassenaarde nature reserve and more specifically the Lazarijberg sub-area, a nice walk around the fort awaits you here, first with some views of parts of the back and so you gradually go around and especially down to the road to Diest near the station of Diest. reach the gate of the fortress where you have a good view. Of course there are also information boards with text and a map of the fort. The brick fort is completely dug into the Lazarijberg and was designed by Major E. De Lannoy, Commander of the Engineers in Diest. It is a rare surviving type of defensive stronghold with a central fortified building and two lapel batteries. The first mention of the fort dates back to 1839 when the Ministry of War of the brand new Belgium asked for 200,000 francs to continue its construction. It was commissioned in 1844. More in the photos (information board). If you come from the road behind Diest station, you just have to follow a small path (but you miss the nature of the Lazarijberg).
