Ottobeuren has been a recognized Kneipp health resort since 1957 and continues the teachings of Sebastian Kneipp. And what not everyone knows: Sebastian Kneipp was born on May 17, 1821 in a small hamlet called Stephansried, which belongs to the parish of Ottobeuren. The baptism of Sebastian Kneipp also took place in the basilica, as did his first mass in 1852.

Since 2012, a memorial stone for Pastor Sebastian Kneipp has also adorned the active park named after him. “As a priest, my primary concern is the good of immortal souls. That's what I live for and that's what I want to die for," writes Kneipp in his famous book "Meine Wasserkur". The sentences make clear what a central role faith also played for Ottobeuren's most famous son. After being ordained to the priesthood on August 6, 1852 in the Augsburg Cathedral, the home primacy in the monastery church of Ottobeuren on August 24, 1852 must have been a drastic event in Sebastian Kneipp's life. The community where he was born had a memorial stone from Nagelfluh erected and blessed in the Kneipp Active Park on the 160th anniversary of the First Mass.
