A city plan from 1568 already shows a fountain house, the Kallebor, in front of the city's eastern ring of walls.
Like all fountains, it not only served as a source of drinking water, but due to its soft water it was also ideal as washing water. An open wash house was built very early on over the well trough to protect the washerwomen from the weather. A meadow for bleaching the laundry was in the immediate vicinity.
Strict regulations applied to the fountain. Not only a strict "washing order" specific times, handling and duration of use, but also precise cleaning duties imposed embarrassing penalties on anyone who soiled the well. This was especially true when watering the cattle.
The water of the Kallebor is not declared as drinking water. But many old Eschers drink the water out of their cupped hands every time they pass the fountain.
None of them have died yet.
