1944. The V1 bomb, the feared German weapon of war, fired from the Netherlands, also caused death and destruction in Kalken. In addition to the two deceased playmates, there were also a few (seriously) injured and the damage in the area was enormous. The peaceful Christmas celebration had to make way for mourning and misery.

A beautiful serene memorial park for a sad event that happened to Kalken on December 24, 1944. An impact from a V1 rocket has abruptly ended the life of two young Kalk lives. Roger, 13 years old and Adolf only 8 years old, returned home from a day of ice fun on the frozen Meersen. Unfortunately, they never got home due to the impact of the V1 rocket. Now a place of reflection ...

On December 24, 1944, a V1 bomb hit the Vaart in Kalken around 4 pm. The bomb was intended for the port of Antwerp. Two children, Roger Hoogewys and Adolf Vereecken, died. There were also injuries and material damage was extensive. In August 2014, part of the V1 bomb was recovered by the Janssens family during road works. The piece has been incorporated into a commemorative monument.
