As early as the Middle Ages, trade in Rostock was primarily focused on seafaring. Since then, the importance of the port for the city has steadily increased. In 1910 the port was deepened and expanded so that larger ships could now also head for the port.

In addition, an industrial site was built at the port. After the division of Germany, Rostock became the central hub of the GDR. In 1960 the construction of an overseas port in Petersdorf and a fishing port in Marienehe made it superfluous.

Today it is a popular promenade where the Hanse Sail takes place every year in August. With many shops, clubs and restaurants, the idyllic harbor invites the city's tourists to linger. Passenger ships, river boats and yachts, for example, can dock at the quay. Excursions with a passenger ship can also be undertaken. The Haedgehafen in the west is used as a museum harbour
