Every year on Good Friday, thousands of believers meet on the Halde Haniel. In 1995, a Way of the Cross was inaugurated here, created by the artist and nun Tisa von Schulenburg, the Oberhausen artist Adolf Radecki and trainees of the Prosper-Haniel mine. Each station consists of a copper plaque depicting the sufferings of Christ and a working tool from the miner's world. Thus, a path has been created, which also illustrates the traditionally close relationship between church and mining. Not least because of the influx of Catholic immigrants at the beginning of the 20th century, this relationship has been reinforced. A high cross on top of the heap commemorates the Pope's visit on 2 May 1987 at the Prosper-Haniel mine. Trainees and trainers of the mine made it out of track slats (guide rails for the conveyor baskets) and set it up on the Zeielplatz Haniel.
