The diaper company used to trickle wastewater onto these areas, approximately 900,000 m2. This contained, among other things, nickel and perforated surfactants. These, especially nickel, seeped into the groundwater. With a flow rate of around 150 m/year, the nickel has now also arrived in the Gütersloh district.

Today the area is a protected area. Many species of birds rest here, for example:
Gray and Canada geese, mallards and tufted ducks, coots and moorhens, little grebes and great crested grebes, reed buntings, reed warblers, field warblers, water rails, bearded tits, kingfishers, barn owls and little grebes

Beautiful hiking and cycling trails lead through this area. At the biological station and also in the wider area there are viewing platforms where you can easily observe and photograph the birds.

Nice quiet place. Unfortunately we had to cancel the tour due to thunderstorms and heavy rain. Will be repeated!
