The A-Ma Temple already existed before the city of Macau. Built in 1488, the temple is one of the oldest in Macao, and is named after the Macau settlement.

The temple is also part of the UNESCO World Heritage list of the Historic Center of Macau. It is a set of gates and prayer halls that are built onto the hillside. Upon entering you have to climb stairs from prayer hall to prayer hall.
