A unique and evocative route, amidst historical relics of the Great War and breathtaking views.

A long and intricate Austro-Hungarian military trench from the First World War rises steeply up the Terragnolo Valley, from Serrada to Forte Dosso delle Somme. In the central section lies the actual Forra del Lupo, a narrow passage between high rock walls with observation posts, slits, rifle and machine gun emplacements, stone steps, and shelters. The Terragnolo Valley was particularly important during the war, especially in the initial stages, as a link from Rovereto to the front line of the Altipiani, for the passage of troops and supplies: hence the need for the long defensive bastion above.

This small canyon was originally called 'Klebostuo' ('Split Rock' in the Cimbrian language); The Austro-Hungarians renamed it "Wolfsschucht" (Wolf's Gorge) because of the howling of the wind, which, channeling through the narrow gorge, produces a sound similar to the howling of a wolf.

The Wolf's Gorge was rediscovered almost by chance only in 2014, after decades of oblivion: a group of enthusiasts recognized the area in vintage photos taken by an Austro-Hungarian officer, Ludwig Fasser, and began organizing its restoration!
