The Dreikönigenhaus in Simeonstraße in Trier not far from the Porta Nigra is a patrician house in the shape of an early Gothic residential tower. The name comes from the time around 1680, when Johann Cornet ran the inn "To the Three Kings" there. Originally the house was called "Zum Säulchen", with reference to the crowning column in the gable and the elaborate marble columns of the windows.

There are currently 13 medieval towers in Trier, of which the older Romanesque ones, including the Jerusalem tower (11th century), the Frankenturm (around 1100) and the Konviktsturm (probably 12th century) of the arx type (castle, defensive tower) correspond, while the younger late Romanesque or Gothic (such as the Dreikönigenhaus and the Steipe) belong more to the domus (house, residential building) type. The early towers served episcopal ministerials as residential and defensive buildings, while the later mostly residential houses of wealthy and influential patricians (like here) or representative buildings of the city council (like the Steipe). The deliberately representative designed Dreikönigenhaus probably belonged to a Trier aldermen and councilor family.

Not far from the Porta Nigra, one involuntarily passes an early Gothic house, the "Three Kings House". The building was built around 1230 as a residential tower. The name comes from a painting of the epiphany, which was once installed in this house. The colorful decoration of the house is a faithful refreshment of the original patterns.
