In addition to the natural splendor, the Laurabossen also offer historical significance.

Coal used to be extracted here in the Laura mine, which was in operation from 1907 to 1992.

Although the mine is no longer in operation, some remnants can still be seen, such as the headstock and some buildings.

"The hiking area De Laurabossen is located in Weert, between the nature reserve Kruispeel and the Belgian border. Here you will find real sand dunes with trees full of character and remnants of the former extensive heather areas. Heather here alternates with pipe grass, wiryweed and blackberry. There are many Scots pines here , but it is planned that these will gradually be cut down and give way to a varied deciduous forest. The Scottish highland cattle help with the maintenance of the landscape. They ensure that the heather does not overgrown with trees. One would like to continue to create more heather. That is good for the nightjar, a rare species of bird that has been breeding in the Lauras for several years. "
