Are you interested in the history of the Appenzeller Bahnen?
The aim of the Museum Appenzeller Bahnen is to make the history of the Appenzeller Bahnen accessible to an interested public. The Museumsverein Appenzeller Bahnen collects and preserves documentation and objects. The museum shows them in an exhibition together with historical vehicles in the former depot of the Säntis Railways in Wasserauen. The exhibition changes every year and always follows a specific theme. More information about the Museum of the Appenzell Railways

Appenzell-Wasserauen (Säntisbahn) 13.07.1912
At the end of 1899, another license was granted for an electric tram from Appenzell to Wasserauen, on condition that the construction of the line be completed by November 1900. The concession expired again because construction could not begin despite the extension of the deadline. But C. Sonderegger didn't give up, he tried again to get a concession. This time for two trains: a valley train from Appenzell to Wasserauen and a mountain train from Wasserauen to Säntis. But again it didn't come to fruition for various reasons. The license was changed again and the railway was divided into four sections: Appenzell-Wasserauen, Wasserauen-Seealp, Seealp-Meglisalp and Meglisalp-Säntis. In 1911 the construction of the first section of the planned mountain railway, Appenzell-Wasserauen, began and on July 13, 1912 the section was opened. Looking back, it took 25 years from the first concession to the opening. The further construction of the mountain railway to the summit was prevented by the First World War and the associated drop in income. In 1939, the SäntisBahn, which never reached the Säntis, was renamed the Appenzell-Weissbad-Wasserauen-Bahn (AWW).
