The ruins of Nideggen Castle are the landmark of the town of Nideggen and are owned by the district of Düren. The rectangular hilltop castle was the seat of the powerful counts and dukes of Jülich and had a reputation for being impregnable in the Middle Ages.
The castle is located in the North Eifel in the High Fens-Eifel Nature Park. In the Nideggen district, it stands west of the town center on a rocky spur facing west (330 m above sea level) above the Rur.
