Landwehr, Landgraben and Landhege denote border marking or border security works and enclosures of settlement areas with the right of enclosure or entire territories. These settlement protection systems are mostly dated to the High and Late Middle Ages and in individual cases have lengths of over a hundred kilometers. However, comparable earthworks have been mentioned since ancient times. The Roman Limes is the best known version of an early Landwehr.
In some regions, especially in forest areas, these land forces are still preserved and are often protected as soil monuments. From Wikipedia

The exact time of origin of this Landwehr cannot be determined. The first written evidence of this defensive wall is from the Middle Ages. It stretches from the Teverener Heide all the way down to the Lower Rhine.
In many places, particularly well between the "Effelder Waldsee" and Rothenbach (Chinese restaurant) near the border with the Netherlands, it can still be seen and walked as a wall with trenches in front of it. Near Roermond, you'll see many remnants of land defenses. At this location, there's a redoubt ("ring wall within which troops were housed and artillery positioned") with a land defense extending to the Rothenbach border crossing. A small path runs along the land defense, which is unfortunately heavily used in some areas for mountain biking, causing significant deformation and erosion in some places.
