Eberhard IV von Schlüsselberg founded the end of the 13th century, a Cistercian monastery, which was dissolved after the destruction of the monastery and church in the Margrave War in 1553 by the Bishop Bishop. 1601-1603 was the reconstruction and Schlüsselau becomes parish. At this time also the pilgrimages to the Painful Trinity begin. In the course of the Baroque transformation, the winged altar is dismantled and walled into the side wall. In the 19th century a neo-Gothic painting took place; Stations of the Cross and new pictures in the side altars in Nazarene style.
The monastery building is now used as a rectory and parish center.

The nunnery of Schlüsselau was a place of female mysticism, of inner concentration and immersion in the pursuit of a personal union with God. Here many women in society sought and found a life of asceticism and chastity. They had voluntarily turned their backs on the world and chosen monastic life as an alternative to family responsibilities. On average, around 20 nuns lived here, mostly of noble origin.

The pilgrimage to the extremely rarely revered "Painful Trinity" goes to Schlüsselau. Here Eberhard von Schlüsselberg founded a Cistercian monastery with a monastery church in 1280. When the family of the noble nobles von Schlüsselberg died out in 1347, the monastery had to struggle with financial difficulties and looting. In 1554 the Cisterze came into the possession of the Bishopric of Bamberg. After the expansion of the church as a parish and pilgrimage church, pilgrimages to the Sorrowful Trinity, as depicted in the miraculous image, began in 1603.
