    Brandenburg State Parliament in the City Palace
    The Brandenburg State Parliament (Lower Sorbian Krajny sejm Bramborska) is the parliament of the state of Brandenburg and has its seat in the City Palace in the state capital Potsdam. The members are elected for five years, so that after the election in 2019 the next election will take place in 2024.
    The first Brandenburg State Parliament was elected in 1946 in the Soviet occupation zone. The second State Parliament was fixed in its composition before the election in 1950 and only existed until 1952. It has existed in its current form since the new formation of the state of Brandenburg in the course of reunification. Since the first state election in October 1990, the SPD has been the strongest force, has always been involved in the state government since then and has provided the minister presidents. Dietmar Woidke has held this office since August 28, 2013.

        One of the city's most important buildings was built between 1662 and 1669. Inspired by the Dutch style of Jacob van Campeus, Johann Gregor Memhardt designed the plans for the three-story main building on the instructions of Elector Frederick William. Located on the Old Market Square, it replaced an earlier Renaissance building erected in 1589/99 under Electress Catherine. Thus, it also lay on the site of the German castle at the Havel crossing, first mentioned in 1375. Two side projections and a central projection with belvedere-style superstructures were attached to the main building. To the right and left of the palace, two single-story side wings, enclosed in the north by a transverse building with a portal, encompassed the palace square. Extensive construction work between 1679 and 1682, designed by Michael Mathias Smidt and Johann Arnold Nering, changed the appearance of the palace. The side wings were extended to the Old Market and closed off by a semicircular gallery with an integrated portal. Jean de Bodt constructed the Fortuna Portal in this area in 1700/01. Under the direction of its client, Frederick II, and based on plans by Georg Wenzeslaus von Knobelsdorff, the City Palace received its final, prestigious appearance between 1744 and 1752. Following the destruction of the City Palace at the end of World War II, the ruins were demolished in 1959/60. On January 27, 1999, the City Council approved the faithful reconstruction of the Fortuna Portal on its original foundations.
