This disused railway line is a section of the Eifelquerbahn between Kaisersesch and Gerolstein. At the moment there is a discussion about whether the Eifelquerbahn can be reactivated. The background is the gigantic flood damage on the Eifel route between Cologne and Trier. It is considered to use a so-called construction track to transport wagons damaged by the flood disaster or also to transport building material for repairs or for the new construction of the Eifel route.

The Eifelquerbahn is a non-electrified railway line between Andernach and Gerolstein in the Eifel. From Andernach to Mayen Ost it is classified as a main line and expanded to double track as far as Mendig.

The Eifelquerbahn is now used by the Lahn-Eifel-Bahn between Andernach and Mayen Ost approximately every half hour and on to Kaisersesch every hour.

Before that, it was operated hourly between Andernach and Kaisersesch as the “Pellenz-Eifel-Bahn” for a long time. The section between Kaisersesch and Gerolstein was temporarily used by the railway company of the same name under the name "Vulkan-Eifel-Bahn" for leisure traffic, but this part of the line has been closed since 2013.
On January 13, 1991, passenger services from Gerolstein to Mayen West were discontinued. Freight traffic was initially discontinued between Ulmen and Kaisersesch, on January 1, 1998 between Gerolstein and Ulmen and on May 28, 2000 between Mayen and Kaisersesch.

On August 6, 2000, a few months after trans regio took over operations between Andernach and Mayen, the line was reactivated in a three-year trial for passenger traffic from Mayen West to Kaisersesch. The operation on the reactivated section was continued after the end of the trial operation.
