    Råbjerg Mile - The Shifting Dune
    The largest shifting dune in Denmark whose movement has not been stopped by vegetation is called Råbjerg Mile and is "located" directly at the southern edge of Skagen.
    The shifting dune measures approximately 1,000 times 1,000 meters, is up to 40 meters high
    and covers an area of approximately 2 square kilometers – the dune moves
    by 15 meters annually to the northeast. This means that the main road to Skagen will be completely covered in sand in approximately 100 to 200 years, and that trees and the like, which are gradually covered by the shifting dune, will appear on the other side about 40 years later. If you go hiking here, you'll have to take off your shoes afterwards, but there's a magnificent view at the very top
    of the shifting dune. The shifting dune leaves behind a low, damp sand expanse extending westward to the Skagerrak, where Råbjerg Mile was formed more than 300 years ago in the landscape known as Råbjerg Stene. The entire area around Skagen was plagued by drifting sand, with sand blown in from the west and deposited as dunes, rendering the land unusable for agriculture. People were forced to abandon their homes and farms because of the drifting sand, as impressively demonstrated by "The Sanded Church," which also fell victim to the dune's advance.

    Today, only the church tower rises above the sand, with marram grass and conifers
    planted to counteract the drifting sand.

    However, the area is already a nature reserve and is state property.

    Please note: There is a risk of encountering quicksand when hiking on the Råbjerg Mile shifting dune!

      Råbjerg Mile is a dune at the northern tip of Jutland, Denmark. She is under protection since 1900. This ensures that the dune migration can continue unhindered. The sand masses reach heights of over 40 meters and cover an area of about 120 ha. Due to the prevailing westerly winds, the sand moves in an easterly direction towards the Kattegat. Every year, the dune covers an average of 15 meters. It is estimated that around 2130 Råbjerg Mile will reach the 3.5 km distant road to Skagen and disappear into the Baltic Sea after another 30 years.
