Friesoythe - Town Hall

In 2008, the city of Friesoythe was able to look back on 700 years of city rights. The very eventful history of the city experienced perhaps its greatest drama with the almost complete destruction of the city towards the end of the Second World War. Very little of the structure has been preserved to this day. These include the buildings "Altes Amtsgericht" (2-storey plastered building with stucco decoration, 1885), "Altes Amtshaus" (2-storey plastered building with stucco decoration, 1885) and the "Neues Amtshaus" (2½-storey solid building), which today belong to the Rathaus am Stadtpark With the local government reform in Lower Saxony, the formerly independent communities of Altenoythe, Gehlenberg, Markhausen, Neuscharrel and Neuvrees were merged with the town of Friesoythe in 1974. Since then, the Town Hall, built in 1959, has been far too small for the town administration For almost 30 years, the administration was temporarily accommodated at four locations in the city area before the central town hall location here on historical land finally became reality in 2003 with a renovation of the old building fabric and a modern extension.
