Easily overlooked, the watermill in Friesoythe an der Soeste today serves the city as a cultural center with various events and offers.
Historically speaking, the castle was built in 1227 by order of the Counts of Tecklenburg.
This watermill lasted an amazingly long time until April 1945, when towards the end of it it fell victim to the madness of the war drive.
In 1997, the mill association took over the building and expanded it with the help of the population. Today we can see the water wheel along with the water snail and fish ladder at the Soeste, which has meanwhile become much narrower, at the mill. Both the water screw and the water wheel are used to generate electricity. The local fishing club "Friesoyther Wasseracht e.V." built the fish ladder to ensure that the fish could easily pass the mill past the downstream Soeste.
