The water surface above the lock Herne-Ost, which widened to the Vorhafen of the lock, one designates as Herner sea. It is about 500 meters long and 250 meters wide and extends from the last pier at the Vorhafen to the AMC Castrop-Rauxel. The Herne Meer is a popular recreational area and the location of the EMSCHERKUNST steel sculpture Reemrenreh by the sculptor Bogomir Ecker.

The operating routes on the canal on both sides of the Herne Meer are great to ride on MTB and trekking bikes. Prima recreation and good section for cycling and hiking tours.
