At the foot of the fortress hill lies the Schlossplatz, which is comprised of the former Ehrenburg residential palace, the arcades with court gardens as well as the Edinburgh Palace and the State Theater. The square was designed between 1830 and 1837. In the middle there is a monument to Duke Ernst I. The Schlossplatz has been known for years as a venue for concerts, performances of the Samba Festival and the well-known annual Schlossplatz Festival.
