The Ponta da Barca Lighthouse was opened in 1930 with a 23 meter high tower and light 71 meters above sea level. It is a second-order lighthouse that was initially illuminated by petroleum vapor and later electrified. Its construction was preferred in Ponta da Barca instead of Pico Negro, due to access and construction difficulties. It is one of the tallest lighthouses in the Azores.
