Tarifa is considered the wind capital of Europe and is an Eldorado for kite and windsurfers. Because of the often strong offshore wind and sometimes high waves, only recommended for advanced kiters.

While tourism was waking up elsewhere in Spain, Die Zeit in 1969 summed up Tarifa's "problem" quite aptly: "The wind blows the tourists away".

If windsurfing hadn't seen the light of day two years earlier, Tarifa would have finally sunk into obscurity. Today Tarifa is the capital. The capital of windsurfers and that is - which closes the circle - again due to the strategically good location. The Strait of Gibraltar is just a damn windy place and they have completely adapted to the windsurfers - apart from Haiku on Maui there is probably no other city where the density of surf bars and shops is higher than here.
