The Rheinschlucht / Ruinaulta is a consequence of the Flims landslide about 10,000 years ago. The Vorderrhein dug its way through the soft debris cones and created bizarre rock walls that are up to 400 m high. Today, the ravine is a unique biotope with rich flora and fauna - and railway technology a main artery of the Surselva.

The path through the Rheinschlucht / Ruinaulta is a leisurely walk that you can take your time with because there is so much to see. It will only be more strenuous when you have to ascend to Conn on the north side. In Versam-Staziun there are train connections and restaurants, but you can just watch the red trains of the Rhaetian Railway as they leave the White Canyon.

The Ruinaulta or Rhine Gorge is up to 400 meters deep and around 13 kilometers long in the Vorderrhein between Ilanz and the mouth of the Hinterrhein near Reichenau in the canton of Graubünden in Switzerland. The Rhaeto-Romanic name 'Ruinaulta' is composed of the two words Ruina (scree slope, quarry) and aulta (high).
