In August 2023, a hailstorm destroyed most of the roofs and windows, as well as the exterior. The persistent rain further contributed to the extensive destruction inside. To this day, the basilica and a large portion of the monastery complex are still under scaffolding and under repair. At the same time, older damage caused by structural deficiencies in the basilica is being repaired, and the educational area is being expanded due to increased demand.

The basilica can only be entered through the entrance area, as the entire interior of the nave is also under scaffolding.

The monastery was founded in 725 near Buron, the original name, and consecrated to the Apostle James the Elder in 739.
When Charlemagne donated a relic of Saint Benedict, the radius of his right arm (still the largest relic of Benedict in Germany), to the monastery shortly before the year 800, a pilgrimage to the monastery developed, and the name gradually changed to Benediktbeuren. The relic is still housed in a silver reliquary in the shape of a forearm in the basilica and, along with it, is owned by the parish.
After secularization, the monastery itself became state property and, in 1930, became the property of the Salesians of Don Bosco, who developed it into a center of holistic education. Today, the monastery houses a youth hostel and a campus of the Catholic University of Applied Sciences Munich, as well as the Center for Environment and Culture (ZUK).
