The first recorded mention of the gate as a clay gate (Viru Gate) dates back to 1362. The name derives from the clay pits that existed in this area outside the city wall at that time. In 1454, the gate complex received a foregate. Between the main gate and the foregate was a fortified water mill, which remained in use until the 19th century. After the gate lost its military function, the five-story main tower was demolished in 1843. The actual gate was demolished in 1888. The foregate's side towers, designed as round towers, survived.

At about one kilometer, the city wall has retained its original appearance from the 16th century until today. Nice view of the neighboring streets and the hustle and bustle below the wall.

The two twin towers of Viru Gate, also known as the Clay Gate, mark the transition between the business district of modern Tallinn and the historic district with its medieval UNESCO-listed streets.

They represent two of the remaining 26 defense towers from an original network of 46 that protected medieval Tallinn.
