😎From 1914 to 1916, the single-track railway tunnel running 287 meters from northeast to southwest was built through the Schlossberg. The war and the frequent cracks and fissures in the rock, which led to the tunnel's poor stability, were the reason for the tunnel's long construction period. A ban on explosions with dynamite following the outbreak of war in 1914 also delayed construction - until safety explosives could be used. Six men, mostly Italians, worked 12-hour shifts, six days a week. The tunnel grew 0.70 to 2.80 meters longer every day. One meter cost 1,587 marks.
Even today it is still possible to take the regular-gauge branch line called “Wipperliese”.
