The Flumenthal power plant was put into operation in 1970. The three turbine generator groups are implementing measures to increase efficiency by 27 MW and generate an average of 146 GWh of electricity from renewable hydropower and six percent more electricity per year.

In 1993, Alpiq clarified how the performance of the Flumenthal run-of-river power plant can be increased. Following successful pilot projects, work was begun as part of a total renovation in 2006. The first turbine generator group converted the Alpiq for about six months in the winter of 2006/2007. The renewal of the other two groups was staggered by one year each. In the spring of 2009, the last machine group went back into operation. The modernization of the power plant included a major overhaul of the machinery groups with the installation of new turbine shafts and aerodynamically modified turbine wheels, the replacement of the electrical control and regulation equipment and the internal demand and generator systems.
