From the late 1970s to 2016, the Delta Flume was used to conduct research into all kinds of issues related to water in the Netherlands. Water behavior could be simulated, such as high waves, to find out what we can do to protect the land against the various effects of water.

Waves of up to 2.5 meters high could be made in the 240-metre-long Delta Flume. The first research in this Delta Flume concerned hydraulic and soil mechanical problems with the storm surge barrier in the Oosterschelde. The Delta Flume was still in use until 2016, but the model has now been transformed by RAAAF/Atelier De Lyon into the imposing artwork Deltawerk//. An ode to all the research that has taken place here and a symbol for the power of the waterworks that have been tested in the Waterloopbos.

The Delta Flume was used for research into dykes and breakwaters under wave attack. I've included a photo from the early 1980's where you can see the gutter "in action". Then there was another hall over part of the gutter. Spectacular to do research like this.
