The Reitling restaurant has so far been a popular destination in the Elm. Many hikes in and around the Reitlingstal can be undertaken from here. Many visitors also appreciate the combination of a visit to a restaurant and a hike.

The location is an ideal starting point for hikes in and around the Reitlingstal. The parking lot for hikers at the restaurant is sometimes quickly parked, especially when the weather is nice and on weekends! So, the early bird catches the worm!

The Reitlingstal extends in an approximately east-west direction in the northwest part of the Elm. Its upper end is around 4.5 km east of Erkerode. This part of the valley is called “Hell”. The Wabe stream rises there at an altitude of around 227 m, drains the valley to the west and essentially follows the course of the valley floor. After a narrow section at the western end of the “Hölle”, the valley opens into an approximately 800 m wide basin, the three flanks of which are formed by the Burgberg, the Kuxberg and a western extension of the Herzberg (all just over 300 m high). In this basin the honeycomb has been dammed several times to form ponds, the largest of which is called the “Great Pond”. There is now a pasture farm with horse stables where a moated castle stood in the Middle Ages (see history). To the west of the basin, the valley narrows again for about 1.5 km before it merges into the surrounding area of the Elm at Erkerode at an altitude of around 150 m.

True to the motto “A little of everything and always only the best” one of the most traditional inns in the “Braunschweiger Land” welcomes you! For over 200 years, visitors have been coming to this idyllic excursion destination in the largest beech forest in Northern Germany and have been treated to a wide range of seasonal dishes, from asparagus to chanterelles to brown cabbage, as well as excellent game specialties from the local area. Those with a sweet tooth can expect a large selection of different types of cakes from our own pastry shop.

😎The three kilometer long Reitlingstal is one of the most beautiful areas in the Elm. The geopath leads along an ancient smuggler's path to the headwaters of the Wabe, to the stream in the "Devil's Kitchen" and past the pond area at Weidehof Reitling. Geologically very interesting and impressive natural landscapes characterize the eastern Reitlingtal.
