    It is the largest maar of the volcanic Eifel. The crater has a diameter of about 1.7 kilometers. After new datings of the GFZ Potsdam, the Maar emerged in an eruption about 70,000 years ago. The lowest point is 18 meters deep. For climate researchers, the maar is a valuable climate archive because the lake is so sheltered from the wind. Year after year, leaves and algae are deposited on the ground. Climate researchers at the GFZ Potsdam have drilled 45 meters deep into the sediments. The pollen and molecules stored in the cores provide information about the climate of the past 15,000 years. Even the eruption of the neighboring Laacher volcano has left its mark: as a 7 to 8 centimeter thick layer of ash in the cores, nine to ten feet deep in the ground. In 1877 Emperor Wilhelm I lowered the water level by two meters to dry fertile land. This is commemorated today by a memorial stone on the eastern shore.       According to the latest findings, the Meerfelder Maar was created around 80,000 years ago by a huge underground water vapor explosion. In such phreatomagmatic explosions, hot magma hits a water-rich rock layer as it ascends. Layers of rock are destroyed and thrown upwards. A visible crater wall is the result. The resulting cavity fills again with rock and a burglary funnel is created on the surface, which gradually fills with water. The entire crater of the maar, which is only partially filled with water today, is the largest in the Eifel.
