The five volcanoes between Meerfelder Maar and Mosenberg were active between 43,000 and 35,000 years ago. From the Mosenberg volcano the lava tunneled through the mountain and shot into the Horngraben and the Wolfsschlucht into the valley of the small Kyll. The river was blocked, but has washed the way again until today. Today, at the upper end of the Wolfsschlucht, one can recognize a part of the solidified lava as smooth basalt rock. And underneath basalt stones that have crumbled over the millennia. On the way to the Mosenberg you pass the volcanic adventure park Mosenberg, where the different rocks of the region are presented. Worth seeing! In addition, you can see on the western slope of the Mosenberg how ash, slag and basalt rock are stacked one over the other. The volcanoes were only active for days to a few weeks and left behind so much rock within such a short time - in contrast to the basement of slate and clay rock. This was once a seabed and grew one meter in ten thousand years.
