Located in the south-east of France between the Rhône, the Durance and the Alpilles, the Canal des Alpines is 120km long and 2 main branches. the first, which passes through St-Rémy-de-Provence, has its water intakes at Mallemort and Lamanon on the EDF Durance canal which comes from Lake Serre-Ponçon and the second, has its water intake on the Durance at Bonpas near Noves. The Canal des Alpines is an irrigation canal. It is gravity, meaning that the water flows thanks to the natural slope of the land. 800 km of “filioles”, small canals derived from a larger one in Provençal, bring water from the Canal des Alpines to the fields and gardens.
