The Palais Gallien has a misleading name in two respects. Firstly, it has nothing to do with the Roman Emperor Gallien, and secondly, it wasn't a palace, but an arena built in the 1st century AD, where bloody battle spectacles often took place. It could accommodate around 15,000 spectators and also demonstrated that the former Burdigala was an important city in Roman times.

Today, it is the only above-ground remnant from the Roman period in Bordeaux.

The Palais Gallien in Bordeaux is a remnant of a Roman amphitheater dating from the 2nd century AD. This historical monument is located in the center of the city and consists of ruins of the original stone structure, including some arches and walls. The amphitheater once seated approximately 15,000 spectators and was used for gladiator fights and other spectacular events.

Today, the remains of Palais Gallien are a reminder of Bordeaux's Roman heritage and a fascinating place to visit for history buffs and tourists. Although most parts of the amphitheater have disappeared over time, the surviving structures still provide insight into the city's ancient past.
