At the beginning of 1612, some fishermen found in a cave in Punta del Hidalgo a canvas with a sacred image, which, after appropriate research, was identified with the image of the Holy Apostle and Evangelist Matthew. From then on, this painting with a wooden frame was venerated in the hermitage of the Virgen de la Consolación, the first hermitage in the Punta del Hidalgo district since 1580.
When Bishop Bartolomé García four months later, on May 6, 1677, the hermitage of San Mateo is blessed, and on the same day Bishop Bartolomé names San Mateo eternal patron of Punta del Hidalgo and gives the Virgen de la Consolación as co-patron.
In 1876 the hermitage of San Mateo was enlarged and the canvas was enriched with the silver frame that it looks like today. The hermitage is now a parish church. San Mateo in La Punta del Hidalgo is the only parish in the entire Diocese of San Cristóbal de La Laguna dedicated to this Holy Apostle and Evangelist.

From the junction to the right at around kilometre 3, you definitely need surefootedness and a certain head for heights. The trail is panoramic, but not a Sunday stroll.
