The Ohligser Heide is, as the name suggests, a very beautiful moor and heathland area in which rare plant and animal species can be found. Information boards in the nature reserve provide information about this.
There are many flat hiking trails through the Ohligser Heide, some of which are also suitable for cycling. The Engelsberger Hof park is a large playground for children. In summer you can also visit the Heide outdoor swimming pool (Heidebad).

The Neanderthal, world-famous by its first inhabitants, is named after the pastor and church composer Joachim Neander, who lived here in the 17th century. He had no idea who the earth was once populated by. And not in the dream he would have come to the fact that the first human species that would be discovered next to our own, would just bear his name: Homo neanderthalensis, short Neanderthals. Neander was Rector of the Latin School in Dusseldorf and loved the valley of the river Düssel. In the deep, quiet ravine between Mettmann and Dusseldorf he walked, composed songs, held services. He belonged to the valley like the river that dug it. And so people called the valley no longer Düsseldal, but Neandertal. The most important localities, the grazing primeval horses and the museum (neanderthal.de) are easy to explore in a few hours. If you want to see more of the area, start in the beautiful Ohligser Heide and wanders through human traces of various eras to the Neanderthals, with whom everything began.
