The magnificent Renaissance castle has a multifaceted and sometimes horrific history: it was first mentioned in a marriage certificate from 1046. At that time, King Henry III. the castle of his wife Agnes of Poitou. In later centuries it was used as a hunting lodge, a farmhouse for beggars and tramps, and a sanatorium for the hereditary and mentally ill.

Colditz Castle, with its almost 1000-year history, looks back on eventful times. Today, high on the rocks on the banks of the Mulde, it towers over the city and is the main attraction for tourists from all over the world. It owes this fame mainly to its function during World War II as a prison camp for Allied officers, especially from England, France, Belgium, Holland and Poland. The immediate vicinity of Colditz is a mecca for hikers and nature lovers. From the Heimatturm, which was built in just 10 weeks in 1901, you have a wonderful view of the city, river and forests. The legend tells of the "dizzy bridge", which will be fatal to anyone who tells a lie.

The European Youth Hostel and the State Music Academy of Saxony are located in Colditz Castle. In the 2nd World War were u.a. English. Officers interned in the castle. A tour with a visit to the museum is recommended.
