The church was once a monastery church. From the 17th to the 18th century the church was a Jesuit college, after its dissolution the Maltese abbey church for a short time. The church has been used by the parish of St. Stephan von Mindelheim since the 19th century. The church is known for its nativity scene from the Baroque period with life-sized figures.

The Lower Gate is right next to the church. The former city gate marks the western entrance to the old town.

Teck with his second wife Ursula von Baden.
