Those interested in history will be impressed by the Othmarkirche in Mödling that churches have been standing here on the slope of the calendar mountain (= bare land) for more than 1000 years and that the current building is the seventh church in uninterrupted sequence at this location. He will think of the destruction of the Romanesque church by the Hungarians in 1252 and the horrors of the Turkish wars in 1529 and 1683.

Construction of the Othmark Church began on May 13, 1454 under Pastor Johannes Hinderbach. An inscription above the main entrance reminds of this. Before that, six predecessor churches had already stood on the site of today's Othmarkirche. The oldest documented predecessor church was a Carolingian church from the 9th century. A church has stood on the site of the Othmarkirche for over 1100 years.

The Mödlinger Karner has served as a bell tower for more than three hundred years. The roof turret on the mighty roof of the Othmarkirche is not suitable for holding large bells. However, the Mödlingers wanted larger bells - the bells that were too small were, among other things, held responsible for hail damage in the vineyards.

The first mention that there was a bell cage on the Karner comes from 1675. Before 1683 there were four bells with a total weight of 60 centners in an essay on the Karner, which was destroyed in the course of the Turkish War.

In 1690 it was decided to raise the "old bell tower" because a new bell tower would have been too expensive. In 1698 the construction of the baroque tower with a double onion roof was completed.
