The pitch furnace is one of the medieval production sites for extracting tar and pitch and was also one of the common forest industries at the time. Its functional operation is similar to that of a coal kiln.
The end products of a pitch oven were distillation products from the wood, such as wood vinegar, pine oil, wood tar and light and heavy pitches.
These products were produced one after the other at a temperature of up to around 400 degrees Celsius. The work process lasted several days. In addition, high-quality charcoal was obtained.

At first glance a strange, somewhat mysterious hillock, which looks like a gate to another dimension in the evening with less light :) But it is a production facility for the extraction of tar and pitch. If I understand it correctly, wood was distilled at high temperatures. Only instead of schnapps were other products made, such as: wood vinegar, pine oil, wood tar, as well as light and heavy pitches. So now I have to google what all the terms mean;)
