Eger origin
The source of the Eger, not to be confused with the source of the other Eger that flows to the Elbe, is in a water protection area near the fulling mill in the Aufhausen district of the town of Bopfingen in the Ostalb district in Baden-Württemberg. The Eger begins its course in an easterly direction, flows under the Ipf through Bopfingen and enters the very little town below flat and completely open landscape of the Nördlinger Ries, where it turns straight to the north-east and crosses the walled medieval town of Nördlingen with a temporary right branch, after which the Mauch, its most important tributary, reaches it in the middle of the Ries To the north-west, whereupon the united river continues in the old direction of the Mauch to the south-east. At the south edge of the Ries, it deepens noticeably for the first time. At Harburg-Heroldingen it flows from the right into Wörnitz, which is here from the north-east Breakthrough valley to the Danube begins.

The Eger lost its former catchment area in the north to the Jagst due to the Ries event.
