The Klappgraben is an artificially created watercourse and runs mostly underground in the city center. In the Middle Ages, it fed the Neuruppin ramparts and thus acted as a protective barrier against enemy attacks. The Klappgraben's catchment area originally extended from Lake Katerbow to its mouth in Lake Ruppin. The ditch originally also served as a source of industrial water for local businesses. After piping and building over the city center in the mid-19th century, it was used primarily for rainwater drainage and is still a receiving watercourse for the "Mesche" wet meadow landscape in front of the city.

After piping and building over the inner city area in the mid-19th century, it is used in particular for rainwater drainage, offers protection for bats and is still a receiving water source for the "Mesche" wet meadow landscape in front of the city. The wet meadows bordering the northwest in particular offer good recreational potential.
